Ornament Marketplace kicks off on Black Friday!

The Heard Museum Shop is buzzing with excitement for this year’s Ornament Market!

Decorate your home for the holidays with wonderful Native-themed ornaments that are hand-crafted by American Indian artists. Choose from hundreds of ornaments in a variety of art forms for yourself or for unique holiday gifts.

Bring out-of-town friends and family to learn more about Native cultures while you shop. Get a jump-start on holiday shopping while avoiding the chaos of the mall. Talented Native artists have crafted around 1,000 ornaments featuring carved wood, miniature baskets, pottery and beads, just for this event! There are ornaments for every budget!

Here is a small sample of the ornaments:

Decorated wreaths, books and gifts made by Native artists will also be available for purchase. All of our ornaments are hand-made and one-of-a-kind. Quantities are limited so shop early for the best selection.

Every year the Heard Shop commissions one of our artists to create a limited-edition of 25 ornaments in an exclusive design, as our signature ornament. This year's limited edition signature ornament was created by Lorenzo and Mary Tafoya (Santo Domingo).

Known for her inlay design creativity, Mary chose shells, turquoise and apple coral to depict a thunderbird- a design made famous by Depression era Santa Domingo artists.  It also includes the earth and star.

The silver work on the reverse side, was designed by Lorenzo and includes a pueblo home and a corn motif, symbolizing prosperity and happiness. The bezels are of sterling silver with the motif overlaid on a reticulated surface.

The numbered edition of just 25 ornaments is priced at $175 each.

In addition to the huge selection of varying ornaments, the shop will also be hosting Debi Flanigan ( Bugarini) of Mata Ortiz , Chihuahua , Mexico as their special guest artist.

Debi is widely known for her very clever depictions of animals native to the desert southwest in nativities, as ornaments, and other decorations in clay.  She will be here on Friday, November 27 which is opening day of the marketplace and again on Saturday November 14th

Ornament Market is truly a wonderful opportunity for purchasing something unique and beautiful for the holidays.

The market will take place at in store and online. Ornaments will be viewable online starting November 27, when the market starts in the stores and will be available through December 25 and while supplies last.

Admission to the Heard Museum Shops is always free – and we never charge sales tax!

Meet Huichol artist Bayless Alexander during Spanish Market!

Bayless Alexander (Huichol) will be showing in the Heard Museum Shop during Spanish Market weekend (November 13th and 14th)

Beaded mask by Bayless Alexander (Huichol)

Bayless Alexander (Huichol) creates beautiful masks and other objects covered in the traditional bead work of the tribe that resides in the mountains of Central Western Mexico*. His jewelry is woven with traditional designs of animals, flowers, and other symbols important to their religion and beliefs.

He will have jewelry, masks, woven bags and embroidered pieces for sale in the Heard Museum Shop on November 14th and 15th.

*The Huichol beaded art that is sold in our gift shop and will be shown as a special exhibit in the shop during Spanish Market is the result of a 25 year collaboration between two North Americans and various Huichol artists. Judith and Jesse have for years been supplying Huichol artists with special carvings and 42 colors of Czech glass seed beads that are four sizes smaller than those beads available in Mexico. Their stated goal is to help present a higher quality of Huichol art and to increase the public's appreciation for this beautiful art form thereby creating a broader international market so more Huichol artists can make a living and stay integrated with their native land and culture.

In addition, Books & More will host:

Albert Quihuis: bi-lingual children’s books
Susan Topp Weber: new book “Nativities of the Southwest”
Stevie Mack: “Day of the Dead Folk Art”
In Books & More on SATURDAY ONLY from 11:30 until 2.

In the Museum Shop:

Charlotte Bell: “Rich Roots” (about the hooked rugs of Las Rancheritas women’s craft cooperative in Mexico)

The Market is free with a suggested donation of $10, which includes museum admission.

Last night, a series of earthquakes took place about 45 miles north of Phoenix, sending vibrations across the state. Though many people throughout Arizona felt the shaking, no one and no art was harmed during the small seismic event. It did create a lot of excitement, however, and the unusual event seemed good cause for a flash sale!

This sale will begin at the same time the last earthquake started - 11:49 p.m., this evening, November 2, 2015. Like the latest earthquake, this sale will be a 4.0 magnitude, meaning all online orders will receive an additional 4% off!* That means members can save a total of 14%! In addition to the discount, all online orders over $100 will be given free ground shaking shipping! This 24-hour sale will only be active until 11:49 p.m. on November 3, 2015.

Like our little Arizonan earthquake, this sale won’t last long, but it will be earthshaking!
